18 May 2010 - Update Action plan 2010

Dear EUHOFA- colleague

About 3 months ago I send you a letter in which I talked about the three Euhofa target points we want to work on for this year.

Our first target was to put together a communication kit to promote EUHOFA and get new schools /colleagues to join. The success of EUHOFA depends on enough international colleagues around the world so we can exchange knowledge and have the benefits of a large international network. EUHOFA can grow more if we all take an active role in this. You, as a member of EUHOFA International, is able to use this kit to send to new colleagues to join EUHOFA International. The kit contains a brand new EUHOFA International brochure; a letter of recommendation signed by myself and by you as a EUHOFA member and a power-point presentation with the unique selling points of EUHOFA. You will find these 3 tools as an appendix with this email (for you to use freely).

Our second target was to further develop our website. Did you know that your important events can be put onto the website to share with all the other members? Please do not forget to make use of this. You can send your information to our webmaster info@euhofa.net.

You can also contact your EUHOFA colleagues through the website. Mail your questions / requests to info@euhofa.net. This will be added to the forum. I am sure there will be enough response out of the 200 EUHOFA members.

Our third target was the fact that we wanted to involve the hospitality industry more in EUHOFA. The 49th congress, that will take place in Providence, Rode Island, USA (7-12 November 2010), will be an example of this. Johnson and Wales University created a very exiting program for the congress and we are counting on a great turnout. So do make sure not to miss this important event. We are looking forward seeing you there! Please be advised that you will be saving by booking before 15 July 2010 !

Visit the website today www.euhofa.net or go directly to http://www.euhofa-jwu2010.org/ to book the congress.

For our EUHOFA members of the Northern hemisphere: enjoy the coming summer vacation, and for our EUHOFA members of the Southern hemisphere: don’t feel bad, fall and winter are the most romantic seasons …. !

Kind regards,

Filiep Defraye
President EUHOFA International

31 January 2010 - Action plan 2010

Dear EUHOFA-colleagues

As you all remember, during my opening speech as new elected president, I mentioned the following:
“We received a lot of high quality input from you and now we have to see what is possible and realistic. To have concrete results on the General Assembly next year, we worked out the following planning. The newly chosen Secretary General, Mr. Harry de Bruijn and myself will get together next month to make a final report in which we summarize all your valuable input. We will choose 3 realistic goals to try to realize first. This report will be forwarded to all the Board members around the end of 2009 for approval. We will aim towards the end of January to have a Plan of Action ready for you. This plan will be published on the website. I am sure we will need your help along the way to succeed in everything we are trying to accomplish. Undoubtedly you have connections in your networks that might be very useful to help us along to make EUHOFA International grow in ways that will benefit us even more in future.”

I did start working on this right away. Together with the board members, we worked out the following proposal based on the input we received from our members:

1) Communication kit
Goal: to put together an information package that the board members or the EUHOFA ambassadors can take along when they solicit other schools to become EUHOFA-member.

Content of the package:

  • a new EUHOFA International brochure,
  • a letter of recommendation signed by the board members or EUHOFA ambassador,
  • a PowerPoint-presentation ‘unique selling points’.

We have sent the kit to the board members + the EUHOFA ambassadors. These EUHOFA ambassadors are EUHOFA members from countries that are not yet allocatedto a board member (for example: Israel, Colombia….). We ask this EUHOFA member if he/she is willing to try to have more schools in their country to join EUHOFA.

2) Activating members to use the EUHOFA-website for networking.
2.1. Events
We try to keep our members aware of the website by sending them an e-mail whenever a new event is added to the website (for instance the e-mail you received from Euhofa.net on 14/01/2010 about the LIVE video-link from the Master Inn Hotel Conference).

An e-mail will be send to all the members with a short description of the news-item. In the same e-mail, you will be encouraged to send anything newsworthy you might have to the secretariat (info@euhofa.net) to have it added to our EUHOFA website.

The news items will stay on the site in chronological order and will disappear after a certain time (depends on how many we receive) and will be saved in a separate file.

2.2. Forum
If you have a specific question to all members, the forum on the web site can be used. Forward your question to the secretariat (info@euhofa.net) and we will add this to the forum. Again all the members will receive an email that a question has been added to the forum. Members will be asked to reply.

3) Involve industry
We will try to get more HR managers to our congresses. For example: Accor Hotels, NH Hotels, Disney, etc. This is a win-win relationship:

  • We will offer the industry the floor to introduce their companies and to be in direct contact with the directors of their future employees.
  • The schools are in direct contact with the industry and can stay up to date with their ever-changing needs.

The industry might be able to get a (temporary) link on our website to their websites.

We hope that the initiatives mentioned above can be the start for a brilliant future of EUHOFA International.

Kind regards,

Filiep Defraye
President EUHOFA International

01 December 2009 - First spe
ech of the new Euhofa president

Yes we can”, these were the historical words of the American President Obama used in his campaign to convince 300 million Americans to vote for him.
Let’s do it” are my humble words as newly elected president of Euhofa International.

Dear friends,

First and foremost I would like to thank you for your support. A pad on the back always feels good and gives courage to those that carry the responsibility to lead an organization. You, in your position as school directors, must know what I mean.

After all, in these uncertain times, everything is being questioned. Being a member of an organization and certainly your visits to congresses: every time a cost-benefit analysis has to be made before making a decision. Of course there is nothing wrong with that, on the contrary. This consideration also applies to Euhofa International. Success of an organization depends among others on, what it has its members, that means you, to offer. I assure you that we, members of the Board, are all very aware of this. It is in fact the reason the Board got together in May to discuss the future mission and the vision of Euhofa International. This past Monday, at the beginning of the congress we shared and discussed the ideas with all of you. It was an interesting discussion about the benefits for members, about the congresses, about the geographical spread of our members and about how to involve the Industry.

We received a lot of high quality input from you and now we have to see what is possible and realistic. Undoubtedly you have connections in your networks that might be very useful to help us along to make Euhofa International grow in ways that will benefit us even more in future.

The Euhofa International flame must be kept burning all year round and every member must be able to see the results. It is up to all of us, members and Board members to make it work. Today the assignment is clear and together with the Board I will take the challenge.

Dear friends, I would like to end with a personal anecdote.

October 1994, United States, Providence, Johnson & Wales, the 33rd E.I. congress. It was also my first congress and because I did not know what to expect, I left my wife home. As a young guy, 35 years of age, I was overwhelmed: flying for the first time to the United States, enjoying a perfectly organized world congress…. I felt honored being able to be part of this unique group of distinguished colleagues / friends or should I say family? Back home being all impressed by the congress I was telling all the things I had seen and done and was already looking forward to the next congress.

The next congress, 16 years later, November 2010, United States, Providence, Johnson & Wales, it again will be my first congress, this time as President. The circle seems to be closed.

Let’s do it together!
